Fins and surfboards: 3D printing, IoT, big data, machine learning and performance testing – Presented by Marc in het Panhuis, University of Wollongong, at the Sports Innovation Conference, which will take place on February 13, 2019, at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Surfing is an iconic sport that is extremely popular in coastal regions. Current surfboard fin manufacturers produce high end products using an expensive injection moulding process to create hydro-foil shaped fins. This process, however, does not allow for easy customisation or rapid prototyping.

I will talk about the development of surfboard fins using a performance feedback loop. This loop involves the unique combination of computational fluid dynamics, computer aided design, 3D printing, stiffness/flex testing, ocean testing (surfing the waves), embedded sensors / wearables, the Internet-of-Things, machine learning and surfers’ perceptive experiences. I will finish my talk with my progress on measuring the mechanical flex behaviour of surfboards.

About Marc in het Panhuis
Marc in het Panhuis is from Grevenbicht (Limburg, the Netherlands). He is a chemical engineer (Ingenieur, University of Twente, the Netherlands) and a physicist (PhD, University of Dublin, Trinity College, Ireland).

At present, he is a Professor of Materials Science and a Chief Investigator in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science at the University of Wollongong (Australia).

His research activities are focused on tough hydrogels, Additive Manufacturing (3D/4D printing), edible/living electronics, soft robotics and 3D printed fins/surfboards for surfing.

He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Materials Chemistry B.
